(SPS) - Sapulpa Public Schools has elevated Kyle Blevins to head wrestling coach. After serving under previous head coach Troy Witzansky the past two seasons, he will bring his own flair for the next year.
The HomeGrown Blevins was Sapulpa’s first 3-time (6A) Oklahoma Wrestling State Champion. In route to winning three state titles, he also captured the (6A) East Regional Title in three consecutive years. The Sapulpa athlete rallied off these first-place finishes in the 152lb, 160lb, 170lb weight classes.
Aside from wrestling, he lettered in two other sports while he attended Sapulpa Public Schools. Blevins earned 3-year letter honor in football and 4-year letter honor in golf.
"Every time the season changed, the sport changed, so, I was always wearing a different uniform," said Blevins.
In the spring of 2008, Blevins accepted a scholarship to wrestle and attend Appalachian State University. While on the mat for the Mountaineers he compiled 124 wins, which stands second on the all-time wins list at Appalachian. The single-season wins record, however, belongs to him. In his senior year, Blevins had 40 regular season wins. In 2011 he was a Southern Conference Champion as well as Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. He earned the title of Southern Conference wrestler of the year in 2012. The last pin for his hat was earning All-American honors at the D-I NCAA tournament where he placed 4th. In his final NCAA Tournament Blevins lost his first match to the #5 seed from Iowa, Mike Evans. He rallied back on the back side of the bracket winning six consecutive matches and defeating the #7, #8, and #9 seeds.
After receiving a Bachelor's degree in Public Relations he accepted a Graduate Assistant position at Gardner-Webb University as a D-I NCAA wrestling coach. He studied and assisted the Runnin’ Bulldogs for two years. In 2014, Blevins earned a Master of Arts in Sports Science & Pedagogy.
In his graduating summer, he accepted the Head Assistant position at GWU. He assisted the Runnin’ Bulldogs for two years and helped them earn their first Southern Conference Title in 2015-16.
Blevins now lives in Sapulpa with his wife to be, Bianca Mehlhorn.
