(Article by Riley Groves, SPS Communications/Marketing Intern) -- Congratulations are again in order for the incredibly talented and hard-working students of the Sapulpa High School band.

The Sapulpa High School Concert Band traveled to Jenks on Wednesday as they competed in the OSSAA State Concert Contest.

The band won big and brought home multiple prestigious awards! The stage performance category consists of performing two pieces of music in front of a panel of judges. The sight reading category consists of learning a brand new piece of music over the span of ten minutes, and then performing that piece for another set of judges.

Because they received superior ratings in all three categories (marching band, stage performance, and sight reading) the band qualified for the Sweepstakes Award, the highest honor that a high school band program can achieve.

Months of preparation and hours of rehearsals went into preparing for the contest. Sapulpa Bands also brought in two guest clinicians to come in and work with the students. Dr. Tyler Austin from Oklahoma State University and Mr. David Gorham attended rehearsals to practice with the students. Gorham just happens to also be the composer of “Starlight”, one of the pieces the band performed.

Congratulations to our students for their fantastic preparation and performances!
