(SPS) -- Two Sapulpa High School seniors – Ruby Fargo (left) and Alexa Farris – have been named finalists in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship competition.

Fargo and Farris were selected from a group of approximately 16,000 finalists first named in September, and will proceed to the next step in the prestigious scholarship competition. High school juniors enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

Both Farris and Fargo fulfilled several requirements to become finalists including writing an essay, submitting a detailed scholarship application, earning SAT or ACT scores that confirm performance on the qualifying test, and obtaining recommendation by a high school official.

“Ruby and Alexa have shown tremendous dedication to learning throughout their time at Sapulpa Public Schools,” said Superintendent Rob Armstrong. “They represent Sapulpa very well, and we commend them for their outstanding scholastic accomplishments.”

Both young women take rigorous academic courses and are busy members of Sapulpa Bands and Band Leadership.

Alexa Farris is the daughter of Joy Farris and Jason and Heather Farris. She plays the alto saxophone, achieving ones in both ensemble and solo. She intends to major in psychology at college.

Ruby Fargo is the daughter of Shannon and Cherry Fargo. She has earned academic and band letters and plays the baritone saxophone. She plans to pursue environmental science upon graduation from Sapulpa High School.

Fargo and Farris will continue in the competition for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth a total of more than $30 million. National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced between April and July.
